In times of sudden change or crisis Carers need to ensure that those they care for are safe and looked after.  A contingency planning service and alert card scheme was set up to do just that.

The Devon Carers Link Alert Card is designed to make sure there is help on hand if carers are suddenly unable to care.

Example of alert card

This is an example of what the card may look like.

If carers are out of action or involved in an accident the card alerts people around them that they are a carer and that without them, someone somewhere may need extra support.

Either the carer or the people with the carer can then call the number on the card to put into action a pre-prepared contingency plan.

This contingency plan can be as simple as nominating another person to take over the carers role, or if the carer is caring for someone with severe or complex needs, the plan may include pre-arranged support from statutory or private agencies.

Devon Carers Link can provide a simple contingency plan form for carers to complete and keep at home. If carers need help thinking this through Devon Carers Link can arrange for one of the Devon Carers Link Services Workers to help. To join the Alert Card scheme or find out more please contact Devon Carers Link on 08456 431 341.

The new scheme has been developed in consultation with carers, funders and other partners. Devon Carers Link is working with Devon Doctors on Call, who provide a 24 hour call response service to support the scheme.

This project brought many benefits, the most important one Carers tell us is the ‘peace of mind’ that having an alert card and a contingency plan brings. We also hope that it will raise the profile of other services available to support Carers, for example e.g. the Take a Break voucher scheme.
