Liz , who comes from the Torrington area, came to visit her local Carers Advice & Support (CAS) worker in her GP surgery. She was feeling very low and worn out from caring for her elderly mother, with very little support, for two years
At the first meeting Liz just wanted to 'let off steam' about how she was feeling. As well as lending a sympathetic ear the worker gave her some useful information about local support groups, respite care etc. Liz said she would feel guilty and selfish if she put her Mum into respite care so that she herself could have a break but she would think about it.
Two weeks after the first meeting Liz came back to meet the CAS again and said that she had been thinking about the advice given about respite, so the CAS helped Liz to find out more information.
Three months later Liz went off for a very enjoyable holiday, and her Mum had a wonderful time staying in a small local respite care home.
Liz also now attends a local carers support group, using an experienced carer from a local sitting service to stay with mother. She says that the small changes that have occurred because of the information and support she has received have really changed her life so much. She feels so relieved knowing that there is somewhere to call for information and support.
